Man-Made Fibre Producers Target Industrial and Technical Textile Markets

More than 11 mn tons of technical textiles were used throughout the world in 2000, according to estimates by Gesamttextil, the German textile industry association. As many as 3.6 mn tons were used in Asia alone, representing 33% of the total, while 3.4 mn tons (31%) were used in North American markets and 2.7 mn tons (25%) in Western Europe. The total value of world usage passed the US$60 bn mark in 2000, representing a 20% increase on the 1995 total of US$50 bn. By 2005 global usage of technical textiles is forecast to reach US$70 bn in value terms.

Within the European Union, technical textiles now account for an estimated 40% of annual textile output. By comparison, clothing and domestic textiles each account for only 30%. Furthermore, the tonnage of man-made fibres used for technical textiles within Europe is equal to almost 40% of the annual production of the entire European man-made fibres industry (including Turkey).

Not surprisingly, man-made fibre producers in Europe, North America and Japan are being attracted increasingly by the continuing growth of the technical textile sector at a time when more traditional textile markets are in the doldrums. However, in order to be able to respond successfully to the requirements of customers within the sector, fibre producers have found it necessary to restructure their operations and remodel their business strategies.
