Technical Textiles for General Industrial Applications

published in Issue 45, 2nd quarter 2001

General industrial applications represent the second largest market for technical textiles in both volume and value terms. As such, the manufacture of these products consumes a huge volume of fibres. End uses cover a wide range and include filtration, conveyor belts, V-belts, industrial hose, abrasive products, papermakers felts, composites, cleaning materials and other wipes, absorbent materials, insulation products, tarpaulins, ropes and nets.

For the future, there is scope for building global businesses in the sector using local manufacturing operations to ensure speed and continuity of supply, while, at the same time, gaining synergies by sharing development and marketing costs. Overall, the market is forecast to grow by 4.4% in volume terms between 1995 and 2005 and by 4.3% in value - faster than the global market for technical textiles as a whole. Moreover, usage is expected to accelerate sharply in some areas as new specialist fibres offering superior performances are developed. For example, variants of polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), thermoplastic polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polycyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate acid (PCTA) have been developed for dryer fabrics. And the prospects are good for high volume usage of high modulus, low shrinkage (HMLS) polyesters and aramids in mechanical rubber goods (MRG). In addition, a new phase of expansion is under way in the advanced composites product segment.
