The peace process has created new opportunities for producers in Jordan and the Palestinian Territories. Israeli restrictions are being reduced, and the opening up of a corridor linking the Gaza Strip with the West Bank has created a Palestinian market of 3 mn people.

However, manufacturers are looking increasingly to expand beyond local borders. Since the Gulf War in 1991, and the collapse of the Kuwaiti, the Saudi Arabian and other Middle Eastern markets, producers have been largely dependent on selling goods to Israeli intermediaries. But many are now planning to enter international markets, some with their own branded products.

To be successful, firms realise that they need to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. They are also aware of the need to educate their managers. The Fashion and Textile Institute near Bethlehem offers support and training to companies in the Palestinian Territories. In Jordan, the Amman Chamber of Commerce is helping to promote the country’s textile and clothing sector at foreign trade fairs.

Most firms realise that selling abroad is not easy, and international competition will get tougher. To gain access to export markets, and also to new technology, some firms plan to set up joint ventures with foreign partners. In return, they will be able to offer their partners low labour costs and quota-free entry to US and European markets.
