The Malaysian textile and apparel sectors encompass a broad range of activities including polymerisation and man-made fibre production, spinning, texturing, weaving, knitting, printing, dyeing, finishing and garment-making. Exports have grown significantly over the years. By 2001 yarn and fabric exports reached M$4,011 mn (US$1,056 mn) while apparel sales had grown to M$7,868 mn.

Malaysia’s well developed infrastructure has helped the country to attract several foreign investors. Penfabric Textile Group—one of the biggest integrated manufacturing concerns in South-East Asia, and a subsidiary of the Japanese company Toray—produces yarns, fabrics, and polyester spun yarn for sewing thread. The Taiwanese company Hualon makes polyester filament and staple fibre yarns and fabrics.

Malaysian firms are having to prepare for 2005 when quotas will cease to restrict textile and clothing exports from developing countries. To ensure that the industry can continue to compete in the global market, the government is promoting a number of measures to improve operational efficiency and productivity while placing more emphasis on research, development and quality enhancement. Firms are being encouraged to invest in new technology, to improve their efficiency and quality and to reduce costs. They are also being encouraged to shift their product focus towards high end products generating higher added value while widening their customer base.
