Performance apparel markets: business update, 1st quarter 2010

US sales of snow sport products—which include apparel, equipment and accessories—remained flat during August 2009-January 2010 although sales via speciality stores in the south increased by 10%.
Adidas has expanded its partnership agreement with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to include Europe. As a result, Adidas now holds exclusive rights to design, manufacture, distribute and market NBA branded apparel worldwide under licence. Under another licensing deal, PS Brands will design and distribute Fila branded socks in the USA.
In other news, Polartec will use Unifi’s Repreve 100—a yarn made from 100% recycled plastic bottles—to produce a new range of high performance fabrics, while Strategic Partners will design, manufacture and distribute medical apparel and footwear under the Dickies brand name.
Berghaus and Pro Sport have entered into an agreement relating to the distribution of Berghaus products in Italy while Perry Ellis International has signed an agreement with Sears Holdings concerning the distribution of Top-Flite branded golf apparel to Kmart stores across the USA.
Several companies have posted declines in their full-year net sales, including Adidas (down by 4%), Columbia Sportswear (down by 6%), Perry Ellis International (down by 11%), Puma (down by 3%), Timberland (down by 6%) and VF Corporation (down by 6%). One notable exception was Under Armour, where net sales grew by 18%. Among those reporting quarterly results, gains in net sales were recorded by Nike (up by 7%) and Unifi (up by 13%) whereas Quiksilver suffered a 2% fall.
In other developments, Windsong Brands has purchased Cloudveil Mountain Works and will rename it Cloudveil Mountain Peak. Zumiez has announced plans to relocate its distribution centre from Washington to California, USA, and Filson has opened its first store outside the USA, in Japan.
Quiksilver, meanwhile, has won the latest round in a long-standing trademark dispute with Kymsta Corporation.
