High strength fibres and fabrics
published in Issue 3, 4th Quarter 2002
High strength fibres represent one of the fastest growing categories of the performance apparel segment. In the wake of the terrorist attacks on the USA on September 11, 2001, the demand for such materials is increasing and this has prompted the major manufacturers of high strength fibres to step up production.
The demand for para-aramid fibres—whose uses include bulletresistant vests—is set to grow by about 10% a year, reaching around 50,000 tons in 2005. Para-aramid, one of the strongest fibres on the market, has become the fibre of choice for reinforcement and protection applications in apparel and accessories. In addition, thanks to its high strength and excellent abrasion resistance, para-aramid has also expanded into the sportswear market where it is used in high performance outerwear and motorcycle apparel.
Kevlar, one of the world’s best-known high strength fibres, ranks among DuPont’s fastest growing products. Indeed, over the next five years, demand is projected to rise by 5-10% per annum. DuPont has a dominant position in high strength applications such as bulletresistant apparel. But Kevlar faces tough challenges from competitors who are looking to take advantage of the robust growth that is forecast for high strength fibres and fabrics.
