This report contains vital data and analysis of trends in exports from the world's leading clothing exporting countries. In particular, it provides a review of world trade, and focuses in detail on the leading ten clothing exporters and their key markets. World clothing exports fell in US dollar terms in 2016—the latest year for which comprehensive data are available—due partly to the appreciation of the US dollar against many currencies. Only four of the world's ten leading clothing exporters achieved growth. China was the largest exporter, followed by the EU, Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, Hong Kong, Turkey, Indonesia, Cambodia and the USA. In terms of destination, strong growth was seen in clothing exports to markets in Asia—including Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan—and to some countries in the EU. World clothing exports are estimated to have picked up noticeably in 2017, and look set to remain buoyant in 2018. Furthermore, consumer expenditure is expected to rise between 2018 and 2022. However, a number of factors could affect growth, including: a rise in global political tensions; a rising economic toll from natural disasters; and a rise in the proportion of trade affected by trade restrictive measures.
