Profiles of Eight Technical Textile Companies in Northern France

The technical textile sector in the Nord-Pas de Calais region of France is highly diverse in terms of raw materials usage, processing routes, end use industries and applications. This diversity is exemplified in Clubtex, an association representing the interests of its 36 members in the French technical textile industry.

This report features profiles of eight Clubtex member companies: Pennel Industries, Duflot Industrie, Schoutteten & Froidure, Dickson Constant, Cousin Biotech, Peignage Dumortier, Dubar Warneton, and Tissavel. These firms have adapted traditional manufacturing methods such as spinning, weaving and knitting to fit the requirements of new markets. At the same time, their use of research and development and advanced processes is benefiting established industrial markets such as automotive, sportswear and medical materials.

Patrice Gallant, president of narrow fabrics weaver Rubans Gallant and also of Clubtex, believes the term “technical textiles” does not do justice to the products being made nor to the applications for which they are used. He prefers the term “soft materials”, since most of the applications have little to do with commonly held perceptions about textiles. This also applies to the materials used—such as glass fibres, carbon fibres, aramids, stainless steel and other metal fibres, valueadded additives and coatings. And the development of “smart fabrics” is further blurring the boundaries between different industries.

Most of the companies in Clubtex have evolved from traditional textiles manufacturing. But today their product ranges result from the need for constant innovation and the seeking out of niches to add value to processes and products.
