Editorial: Can Fast Retailing Maintain its Unique Glow?

Fast Retailing is well named. Its success is nothing short of phenomenal. A few years ago, the company—whose profile starts on page 143 of this issue—was a relatively small retailer operating in the Japanese suburbs. By last year it had become Japan’s largest and fastest growing apparel retailer. Sales through its Uniqlo stores increased by more than 70% per annum in the three years to 2000/01—in a country whose economy in recent years could hardly be described as dynamic.

Stores are usually rented rather than owned. This facilitates rapid growth and keeps debt under control. In some cases rents are linked to turnover. This minimises the risks for Fast Retailing while providing the shop owner with a piece of the action.

In September Fast Retailing became an international player when it opened its first four shops in the UK. And this year, if all goes according to plan, the company will open its first stores in China—which has the potential to become the world’s largest clothing market.
