Profile of VF Corporation

published in Issue 94, July 2001

VF is one of the world?s leading garment manufacturers. The company is active in a wide range of sectors, including jeanswear, intimate apparel, clothing for infants and small children, workwear, knitwear, and outdoor clothing and equipment.

The company?s products are strongly branded. To manage its portfolio better, VF has established six ?coalitions? or business groups: Global Intimates; Imagewear; Outdoor; North and South America Jeanswear; International Jeanswear; and Playwear.

In order to further reinforce the strength of its clothing and equipment brands, VF continues to pursue a vigorous programme of new product development, new product introduction and line extensions. The programme is backed by extensive consumer and retailer research, and ideas are cross-fertilised between business groups and regional markets.

VF was able to expand its level of sales in 2000, partly as a result of acquisitions, although profits suffered from the ill-wind of the deteriorating US economy and of rationalisation measures implemented by the company. During the first half of 2001, sales were sluggish and net income was down on the corresponding period of the previous year.
