Denim and Jeans: Trends in EU Production and Trade

EU denim production rose by 10% in 1999, thereby reversing four consecutive years of decline during 1995-98. Prior to 1995, denim manufacture in the EU had risen significantly. Exports of EU-produced denim grew during the late 1980s as EU jeans manufacturers made increasing use of outward processing in order to reduce making-up costs. Since 1995, however, export growth has weakened as flat weave (chambrays or piece-dyed) fabrics have replaced denim in many applications.

Weavers and jeans manufacturers have remained inventive by developing new product variations to keep consumer interest alive. Fashion trends have moved towards lighter weights, looser weaves and open end yarns to ensure that West European manufactured denim products remain competitive anywhere in the world - especially in designer and other up-market applications.

The USA remains a major export destination for EU-produced denim, although shipments to the USA have fallen since 1995 as Morocco and Turkey have increased their purchases from EU firms. The USA also continues to be the leading source of EU denim imports, despite competition from lower price suppliers.

EU manufacturers have survived the competition from low cost imports by marketing their products on the basis of their superior quality standards and processes technologies. But as developing countries continue to improve their fabrics and manufacturing processes, the future for EU denim makers is likely to be in the production of specialist fabrics.
