World capacities and shipments of textile machinery, July-August 2003

2002 was a year of mixed fortunes for the international textile machinery market. However, most sectors picked up after a number of setbacks in 2001.
The market for weaving machinery was particularly healthy in 2002. Deliveries of shuttleless looms, the more advanced weaving technology, soared by 64%. Shuttle loom shipments went up by 44%.
In the spinning sector, fortunes were more mixed. Deliveries of short staple ring spindles fell by 4.8%, similar to the 5.0% fall in 2001. Shipments of long staple spindles suffered an even greater fall (down 23%). But deliveries of open end rotors—which are based on a newer technology—rose by 40%.
Fast growing markets for open end rotors included China, Canada, Syria and Taiwan. China increased its purchases by 95% in 2002 and took 64% of global open end rotor shipments. Other leading buyers, but some distance behind, were Turkey, the USA, and Brazil.
Fast growing markets for shuttleless looms in 2002 included China, Hong Kong, Egypt, Turkey and Syria. Leading buyers included China, Turkey, Hong Kong, and Italy. China alone took 51,273 shuttleless looms in 2002, 117% more than in 2001. Overall, China accounted for no less than 72% of the 71,090 shuttleless looms shipped worldwide in 2002.
