This report features profiles of four leading companies in Botswana: B & M Garments, a supplier to Hennes & Mauritz; Caratex Botswana, a 30%/70% export knitwear joint venture between Tally Tshekiso of Botswana and Caratex of Taiwan; Nortex, a successful regional exporter of towels; Pearl Creations, Botswana’s only underwear manufacturer; and Star Apparel Botswana, an investment by Sri Lanka’s Tri Star Group. The report also features profiles of five leading companies in Zambia, namely: City Clothing Factory, Zambia’s leading manufacturer of school uniforms; Swarp Spinning Mills, Zambia’s only exporter of textiles to the EU; Towel Textiles, Zambia’s only towelling enterprise; Unity Garments, a manufacturer of industrial wear, protective wear, school uniforms and high fashion trousers; and Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles Joint Venture Ltd (ZCMT), a 34%/66% joint venture between Qingdao Textile Corporation in China and the Ministry of Defence in Zambia. ZCMT grows raw cotton, manufactures yarn, fabrics and garments, and is the biggest integrated textile enterprise in Zambia.

Garment exports from Sub-Saharan Africa have grown significantly under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides quota-free and duty-free access to US markets. AGOA should also boost the textile industry—after September 2004 garments have to be made from US or regional materials to qualify for AGOA benefits. Some companies are gearing up to take full advantage of AGOA. However, exporters face a number of obstacles and many prefer to focus on local or regional market niches.
